
Damon King is Senior Counsel with the Economic Justice Program at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice.
Prior to joining the Institute, Damon served for a decade in policy positions for District of Columbia legal services organizations. As Legal Aid DC’s first Senior Policy Advocate and, ultimately, first Director of Policy Advocacy, Damon worked with colleagues and strategic partners to improve public policy affecting District residents living in or near poverty. This included successful advocacy to remove barriers to health coverage for District residents who are immigrants, protect economically vulnerable District residents during the COVID-19 pandemic, and reform the District’s wage garnishment law to better protect District workers struggling with consumer debt. Damon also served as a Senior Policy Attorney for DC’s Children’s Law Center, where he advocated with D.C. policymakers on issues affecting children and families, including foster youth services, TANF policy, homeless services, and early childhood home visiting programming. In addition, Damon served as Policy Director for the American Civil Liberties Union of the District of Columbia and as a Policy Advisor for the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia.
Damon holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School, where he was a member of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau and received a Skadden Fellowship. Damon also holds a B.A. in Government from Harvard University.
