NEWARK – In response to the news that Mikie Sherrill will be the next Governor of New Jersey, the following can be attributed to Ryan Haygood, President & CEO of the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice:
“The voters have spoken, and Mikie Sherrill will be New Jersey’s next governor.
“We congratulate her.
“During one of the most perilous times in our nation’s history, states have a huge role to play in protecting our democracy, providing for the people and building a strong foundation.
“New Jersey, as it starts a new chapter, must step up.
“Governor-Elect Sherrill will inherit one of the wealthiest and most diverse states in the country – and one of the most inequitable.
“When it comes to wealth, education and homeownership, the disparities between Black and Brown New Jerseyans and their white neighbors are immense and growing worse by the day – with an astounding $600,000 racial wealth gap.
“When it comes to safety from the federal government, some of our most vulnerable residents are living in fear.
“In essence, we live in two New Jerseys.
“It will now be up to Governor-Elect Sherrill to face this crisis and ever-deepening divide head on by affirmatively advancing a bold vision that is responsive to all of us and protects our rights, needs and access to the great prosperity of this state.
“And it’s up to every one of us to exercise our power and hold her accountable.
“At the Institute, we will continue to do our part, day in and day out.”
